Cleaning removes dirt and residue. Disinfecting is a separate step used when needed, such as when someone in the home is sick. A bathroom cleaner and a disinfectant do not necessarily do the same job.

Start with visible soil

Clear toiletries, remove loose debris and clean surfaces according to the product label. Keep a separate cloth or brush for the toilet.

Use the exact contact time

If disinfection is needed, choose an EPA-registered product labeled for the surface. Follow its directions, including how long the surface must remain wet. There is no single five- or ten-minute rule that applies to every product.

Check the finish

Use products suitable for tile, grout, fixtures and countertops. Follow manufacturer guidance for natural stone and delicate finishes. Rinse where the label requires it.

Protect your household

Follow label instructions for ventilation and protective equipment. Never mix cleaners or disinfectants. Keep products stored securely and pets and children out of the cleaning area.

Finish with simple upkeep

Put out clean towels, empty the wastebasket and allow wet surfaces to dry. Keeping clutter off the sink makes your next routine clean easier.
